Temporary barriers

Temporary free-standing barriers are erected at a distance from a property or group of properties to hold back, or in some cases deflect, floodwater from reaching the community at risk. They can also be used in situations where a body of water needs temporarily to be controlled to allow work or inspections to be carried out.

There are various types of barrier on the market - some rigid, some flexible. Each has some unique way of forming a watertight barrier - generally with some form of fabric or sheet. Some use a separate frame to support the barrier. Some are formed by a water or air-filled tube.

Aqua Levee is a water-filled emergency solution to large-scale flooding. It can take the place of sand-bag walls, and is compact, light, and easy to use. The current design can retain over 1m of water, and with proper storage and care can be re-used over and over. It has the benefits of easy deployment (each unit weighs only 23kg), easy re-use (just rinse it down and stack it away) and, with anchors in place, a high factor of safety.

The Aqua Levee flood control system consists of triangular cross-section tube-like structures that are filled with water on site to create a temporary artificial levee.

It is remarkably swift and simple to erect, enabling rapid response to fast-rising and flash-flooding.

  • 200 metres of barriers can be stored in and deployed from a 4x4-towed trailer. Aqua Levee can also intervene in active flood waters. In October 2002 Aqua Levee was successfully introduced in 40 cm of flowing storm surge from Hurricane Lili.
AquaLevee deployment
  • Empty Aqua Levee units are easily handled, weighing just 23 kg. Once in position, weight is added to the flood barrier from any water source, including the flood waters themselves. No ground preparation is required for standard deployment, and no assembly is required on site.

Filling AquaLevee with water
With appropriate water supply, units can be deployed in as little as two minutes.

  • Rigid sides withstand impact from floating debris, whilst the flexible ends and bottom provide the seal.
  • Aqua Levee's modular design allows flood barriers to be extended in height, and strengthened, to meet changing flood conditions. The units are structurally stiffened to withstand lateral pressures and the gravity loads of stacking.
AquaLevee
  • Constructed from non-absorbent materials, the Aqua Levee is resistant to UV degradation, and with proper handling and storage can be deployed over and over. Storage is simple, each unit folding into a space approximately 80mm high by 800mm wide.

Aqua Dam in use

A water-filled double-skinned sausage that provides a versatile, reusable barrier to flood waters, or for use as a coffer dam. It is available in differing sizes to restrain up to 1850mm of water, in lengths of 30m. Stability is provided by the double tube interior. Aqua Dams are lightweight, easy to use, and deliver impressive results at a fraction of the cost of earthen dams, sandbags or sheet piling.
