Costs to insurers

Research by the insurance industry has shown that half a metre of floodwater in a modern semi-detached house will result in an average cost of £15,000 - £30,000 to repair the building, and £9000 to replace damaged belongings. Claims from the floods of 2006 exceeded £2 billion.

With 350,000 new properties earmarked for development on flood plains, and a growing body of evidence that flooding may become a more frequent feature of British weather, the trend of more properties becoming uninsurable, and premiums for other spiralling, becomes ever more evident.

Household Flood Insurance

As the possibility of flooding becomes ever greater, so the difficulty of insuring your property and its contents against such a disaster increases.

IFDP has found that most insurers are not prepared to take on any new business where the issue of flooding has arisen, whether this has been a regular occurrence or simply exceptional flash flooding situation. Indeed, many insurance companies now run for cover the moment flooding is mentioned.
